Sedation dentistry is an ideal way of receiving the dental care that you need, but without the fear and anxiety commonly related to dental visits.
Dental anxiety affects many patients, and some even avoid going to the dentist at all costs, because of their fears. Avoiding the dentist until a problem arises is never a good idea. If this sounds familiar, consider sedation dentistry in Choto.
Commonly asked questions regarding sedation dentistry:
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective method of receiving dental treatments under a relaxed state of mind. It can help keep you comfortable, reduce dental anxiety and stress, and makes time go by faster during a lengthy appointment. While under sedation, you will feel calm and relaxed throughout your procedure but remain awake the entire time.
What type of sedation does Choto Family Dentistry offer?
At Choto Family Dentistry we offer nitrous oxide known as “laughing gas,” which is administered via a comfortable mask worn over your nose during your treatment.
During your consultation with your Northshore dentist, we will explain everything you need to know about sedation dentistry as it relates to your upcoming procedure. Also, we welcome any of your questions or concerns that you may have about the process.
Will I be able to breathe on my own?
Yes. Sedation dentistry is often referred to as “conscious sedation,” since you remain awake and are aware of your surroundings. In fact, with nitrous oxide, you are able to still communicate with the team of dental professionals taking care of you. You will, however, feel a deep sense of relaxation and calmness while the nitrous oxide is working. We will continue to monitor your vitals during the procedure to ensure your health and safety.
Will I need someone to drive me to and from of my appointment?
Since the effects of nitrous oxide wears off shortly after treatment, you do not need to have anyone drive you to and from your appointment. Once we stop the flow of the gas and you breathe regular oxygen for a few minutes, you will feel back to normal. You should be able to resume your normal activities following your appointment as well.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. Research concludes that nitrous oxide is safe for most healthy individuals, even children. However, keep in mind that certain pre-existing medical conditions may preclude you from being a candidate for nitrous oxide. Therefore, we highly advise that you discuss your complete medical history, as well as any medications, herbs, or supplements that you take, with your Choto family dentist during your consultation.
Will the sedation make me feel sick?
It is rare that side effects such as sickness or nausea occur as a result of nitrous oxide. However, the dentist may provide you with certain foods and beverages to avoid such as alcohol, prior to undergoing sedation dentistry. Also, during your sedation dentistry experience, should you begin to feel sick at any point, be sure to bring that to the attention of your dental care team.
Is sedation dentistry right for me?
Sedation dentistry is ideal for many patients who experience dental anxiety. However, it may not be for everyone. If you experience dental anxiety, are undergoing a lengthy procedure, have a strong gag reflex, or just have a difficult time sitting still for long periods, then you may be an ideal candidate for sedation dentistry.
