Serving Choto, Northshore, and surrounding areas of Knoxville, TN
At Choto Family Dentistry we believe our program of preventive care represent some of the most valuable services we perform.
What is preventive care?
Our preventive care program includes the following treatments and procedures:
- Dental cleanings
- Dental examinations
- Digital X-rays
- Mouth guards/sports guards
Why is preventive care important?
Certain preventive care services can detect oral health issues in their early stages before they become serious, while other preventive treatments help oral concerns from ever starting. Such treatments save our patients time and money because they avoid needing more intensive, more expensive procedures later in life. Also, preventive care involves routine dental cleanings that allow our dental hygienists to remove the tartar buildup from around your teeth and gums. Tartar buildup occurs in every patient, regardless of age, eating habits, and oral hygiene efforts. However, a healthy regiment of oral hygiene can help lessen the amount of buildup that your teeth develop, although not prevent it entirely.
What happens when you avoid dental care?
We echo the recommendations of the American Dental Association, which advise everyone visit their dentist twice per year, or once every six months, for a professional cleaning and examination. The cleanings are the only way to remove all plaque and tartar from your teeth. Meanwhile, the examinations—performed in conjunction with other diagnostic procedures such as taking X-rays—allow your Choto family dentist to build a record of your oral health and identify any significant changes that could signal potential problems.
When you avoid going to your dentist, you face a significantly higher risk of major oral health issues, including:
- Gum disease, which can lead to gum recession, tooth loss, and double your risk of heart disease
- Missing teeth leads to the eventual deterioration of supporting bone structure, which can increase the risk of stroke
- Scientific research also has determined a potential link between poor oral health and chronic ailments such as kidney disease, anxiety, depression, and even cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s
What to expect from a routine dental visit
Our dental cleanings are much more extensive than any at-home oral hygiene procedure you can perform.
One of our professional and courteous dental hygienists will remove all tartar from your teeth and gum line by a procedure known as a prophylaxis. Then, your teeth are polished and flossed. Finally, your Northshore family dentist will perform a thorough evaluation of your mouth and teeth. Any changes will be documented so that we can use that as a reference during your next appointment. If at any time during your checkup we determine you have an immediate need, we will discuss this with you and devise a plan to provide care.
A good regimen of oral hygiene remains the best measure of preventive care. Remember to brush your teeth twice per day, floss daily, and encourage these habits in your children. No treatment we offer will be a substitute for that daily diligence.
