Protect your family against cavities and tooth decay by obtaining fluoride treatments from the professional dental team at Choto Family Dentistry. Fluoride remains one of the staples of our regimen of preventive care.
The benefits of fluoride treatments
The use of fluoride is a practice that dates back decades in the field of dentistry. Fluoride contains calcium and minerals that exist naturally in your mouth, which provides additional protection against tooth decay. Fluoride also can re-mineralize the small imperfections that develop on the surfaces of teeth. Each treatment lasts approximately six months, and should be reapplied at each dental cleaning appointment.
Who should have fluoride treatments?
All children can benefit from fluoride treatments. The idea is that routine fluoride treatments help protect against tooth decay, which can otherwise be a common occurrence among children since they tend not to brush their teeth as often or as thoroughly as adults. The additional protection against tooth decay can help improve the likelihood of a lifetime of good oral health.
However, fluoride treatments are not just for pediatric patients; they can be beneficial for patients of any age. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes dental insurance policies do not cover fluoride treatments for adults. Discuss this with our business coordinator, should this be of a concern to you.
Fluoride treatments also are recommended for patients in the following situations:
- If their water source is non-fluoridated, or drink well water or distilled water
- If they cannot visit the dentist as recommended (twice per year), due to factors such as economics or no means of accessible transport
Fluoride Treatments in Choto and Northshore
Choto Family Dentistry offers the following types of fluoride treatments:
- In-office: We can administer one of these treatments in just a few minutes, often during your regular visit to our dental office in Choto after a cleaning and examination.
- Home tray: Recommended for patients who are at a high risk of tooth decay due to their water supply or other factors such as genetics. We create home fluoride trays by taking impressions of the mouth as a model in the construction, thus designing trays that completely cover the surface of each tooth. We then provide you with a fluoride solution only available through your professional dental office.
What to expect during a fluoride treatment
Getting a fluoride treatment is easy and fast. After we thoroughly clean your teeth, we apply the fluoride treatment to your teeth by brushing it on. Then, after any fluoride treatment, you should wait a minimum of 20 minutes before eating, drinking, or rinsing your mouth. Otherwise, you could rinse away the fluoride varnish and minimize its effectiveness.
Fluoride never should be considered a replacement for good oral hygiene such as daily brushing and flossing. Be sure to look for brands of toothpaste and mouthwash that contain fluoride; any brand that does so has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance on the packaging.
