Even if a tooth is seriously damaged due to tooth decay or an injury, the team of professionals at Choto Family Dentistry can prevent the total loss of the tooth by installing a dental crown.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown commonly referred to as a crown, replaces the entire exterior of a tooth. A crown also protects the interior structure of a tooth, known as the pulp, which contains the blood vessels and nerves. The additional protection from the crown saves the tooth from an extraction when the tooth has become brittle, broken, or severely damaged.
We can use a crown to treat any of the following problems:
- To repair a broken or fractured tooth
- To protect a tooth following a root canal procedure
- To repair a tooth that has sustained major damage from a cavity or tooth decay
- To replace the exterior of a tooth that is weak, misshapen, short, brittle, or has been damaged by an existing filling
Crowns also can be placed on teeth that are discolored but have not responded to teeth whitening treatments, although typically less invasive procedures may be a better option in this case.
What to expect from a crown procedure
It will take at least two office visits to complete the installation of a crown. At the first visit, we will administer an anesthetic, after which the dentist will remove any damage or decay from the tooth being treated. The tooth is then thoroughly cleaned, and digital impressions are taken, which the lab uses as a guide to make your crown. A temporary restoration is to be worn while the dental laboratory fabricates your final restoration, which may take up to two weeks. You will then return for a second appointment in which we install the permanent crown.
You can receive either of these types of crowns at our office:
PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crowns have the same durability as the solid metal or gold crowns that have been used for decades in dental work. However, the metal interior structure is covered with top-quality dental porcelain for aesthetic purposes. This porcelain will be color matched to blend in with you other teeth, but also will reflect light the same way natural tooth enamel does.
Metal-free crowns are a great treatment option for patients who wish to have a more aesthetic look to their crown, specifically on a front or visible tooth. Also, these all-porcelain crowns in Choto are ideal for patients who may have an allergy to certain metals that are found in the PFM crowns.
Dental Crowns in Knoxville
A dental crown can help save your tooth from total loss. It restores it so that you can smile with confidence. However, not all cases will warrant a dental crown. In efforts to try and preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible, we may recommend a less invasive restoration, depending on your needs.
