Are you living with missing teeth? The restorative dental team at Choto Family Dentistry can install a dental bridge to replace missing teeth, and restore your bite to optimal function.
What is a dental bridge?
Bridgework literally “bridges” the gap created by extracted teeth, while at the same time, minimizing stress on your bite and maintaining facial shape. A bridge can replace a single missing tooth or multiple lost teeth. It is a permanent tooth replacement option, meaning that it does not have to be removed like a partial denture.
An abutment at both ends of the bridge serves as dental crowns that fit directly over the two teeth on either side of the space. The pontic or middle portion of the bridge is what takes the place of your missing tooth. Bridges can be made to replace one or several teeth that are adjacent to each other so long as there is a permanent tooth or dental implant to hold the abutments in place.
At Choto Family Dentistry, we provide two types of bridges:
- PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal): This bridge has an interior metal sub-structure, which then is covered with top-quality dental porcelain. The metal interior makes this type of bridgework best for areas of the mouth that endure more stress, like molars or back teeth. The dental porcelain outer covering is shade-matched to look nearly indistinguishable from your remaining natural teeth.
- Metal-free: This type of bridgework is made entirely of dental porcelain. It is typically recommended for front teeth. Metal-free bridges also are an ideal option for individuals with a metal allergy.
- Prettau Xirconia bridge: This type of bridge is a single unit bridge that attaches to dental implants. The xirconia material is aesthetic and durable, meaning it will not chip, crack or break.
Why should I choose a dental bridge?
Comfortable: Bridges are bonded directly to your existing teeth or a dental implant, which means they are permanent. They will not shift in the mouth or irritate the mouth, and gums like dentures or partial dentures have been known to do.
Aesthetic: A dental bridge can be made to mimic the appearance of natural teeth, even down to the specific color. The high-quality dental porcelain used even mimics the same light reflecting qualities as tooth enamel, making a bridge appear natural.
Convenient: Bridgework is maintained by brushing and flossing it just like you would your real teeth. It is especially important that you keep the area under the pontic clean and free of food debris to prevent gum infections. Also, maintain a good thorough regimen of oral hygiene that includes regular visits to the dentist, which will help prolong the life of your bridgework.
Economical: A dental bridge is one of the less expensive tooth replacements in restorative dentistry. However, bridgework is not always the perfect fit for each patient. At Choto Family Dentistry, we invite you to have a consultation with our Knoxville cosmetic dentist to determine which tooth replacement option is best for you.
Is a dental bridge right for me?
We can install bridgework as an alternative to a dental implant, or in combination with implants. If you have a missing tooth and are in search of an affordable, permanent tooth replacement option, then a dental bridge may be right for you.
However, dental bridges are not recommended for children who are still waiting for all of their permanent teeth to erupt, or in any patient currently suffering from gum disease. If you currently suffer from gum disease or have lost teeth as a result, the periodontal team at Choto Family Dentistry can treat the infection and then provide your desired tooth replacement.
